Oxycontin

What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet?

At Narconon, we are continuing to interview individuals addicted to prescription medication. Narconon is interested in offering effective drug rehabilitation as well as educating the general public on the dangers and easy accessibility of prescription pain medication.

There are times when pain medication is a life saver. Unfortunately, there are also times when there is unnecessary drug addiction.

Marianne Skolek, Activist for Victims of OxyContin and Purdue Pharma recently sent the following for immediate release.

”To all Attorney Generals

Purdue Pharma was charged in 2007 with criminally marketing their drug,
OxyContin to patients and physicians as less likely to be addictive or
abused. The company and its three CEO’s Michael Friedman, Howard Udell
and Paul Goldenheim were charged in US Federal Court in Virginia to
these charges, pled guilty and were sentenced. The company and these
individuals are currently on probation and have to perform community
service.

The devastation in epidemic proportion of OxyContin death and addiction
in every state in the country is well documented and is in the news
every day. In June 2008, Purdue Pharma, through their website “Partners
Against Pain", advertised the below for anyone having access to the
Internet to view:

Health of pregnant Healthy gravidity, healthy babies.

A Guide to Pain Treatment Goals

I have notified the FDA that Purdue Pharma marketing pain treatment for
pregnant women not only jeopardizes the lives of scores of mothers, but
also unborn babies in the high potential for addiction and death. They
will advise me of action to be taken against Purdue Pharma by them.
Since Purdue Pharma manufactures OxyContin, this marketing tactic I am
convinced is a violation of their probation.

Attorney Generals are being provided with this release to alert them to
the further devastation Purdue Pharma will cause in their marketing
OxyContin for pain in pregnancy through Partners Against Pain.

Searching the web for meth recipes? ways to cook meth?

Posted on Jul 31, 2008

If you have a drug addict in the family get them into treatment now or chances are, they will wind up in prison.

The United States has the highest number of citizens locked up per capita than any other country in the world. The greater percentage of those locked up are in prison because of drugs. We continue to fail our citizens when we lock them up for falling into a trap that is sometimes easier to fall into than to avoid.

When more people are searching the web for basic ways to cook methamphetamine and meth recipes than healthy diets, and prescription drugs are simple to obtain illegally on line, we have a problem. And 7.2 million Americans will be incarcerated this year for lack of real answers to the problem. An estimated 45 billion dollars will be spent on prisons this year in the US without a raised eyebrow from most politicians or taxpayers.

According to Join Together Tim Lynch of the Cato Institute states that the latest figures “demonstrate that we have lost our way when our laws require such a massive amount of incarceration.”

“When you lock up a bank robber, a child molester or a mugger, you’re removing a career offender from the street. When you lock up a drug dealer, he is immediately replaced. We tried this with alcohol during Prohibition and it didn’t work.”

There is hope though. Studies show that increases in admission to substance abuse treatment are associated with reductions in crime and incarceration rates. Our citizens are safest when there is effective treatment available.

The obvious solution is effective drug treatment. It is the only alternative to incarceration. Whether the incarceration is impending or the offender is not yet on the radar screen, any drug abuser is on a high speed highway to jail unless they are stopped by someone other than a cop.

If you know someone who is abusing drugs get them into rehab. Don’t count on them to do it themselves – they need your help.

Prescription drugs causing more deaths...

Posted on Jul 30, 2008
Painkillers, Other Prescription Drugs Causing More Deaths, Injuries September 12, 2007 Join Together A "substantially growing number of patients" are being injured or killed by the prescription drugs they are taking under doctors' orders, according to a new report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. Reuters reported Sept. 10 that researcher Thomas Moore and colleagues said that reports of such deaths and injuries have more than doubled between 1998 and 2005, largely due to problems with painkillers and immune-system boosters. Drug-related deaths increased from 5,519 in 1998 to 15,107 in 2005. Overall reports rose from 34,966 to 89,842 during the same period -- a rate four times greater than the growth in outpatient prescriptions. "This growing toll of serious injury shows that the existing system is not adequately protecting patients and underscores the importance of recent reports urging far-reaching legislative, policy and institutional changes," they wrote. The researchers based their conclusions on data reported by drug makers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Congress is currently considering legislation that would increase such surveillance.

The findings appear in the Archives of Internal Medicine. To Read More or tell Join Together what you think click here. For More information on Drug or Alcohol Rehabilitation, Intervention or what you can do to help your Community contact Narconon of Georgia 1-877-413-3073 or drugsno.com

What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet

A recent report from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University find “Despite a decline in the number of Web sites advertising or selling controlled prescription drugs, like Oxycontin and Valium, Xanax and Vicodin, and Ritalin and Adderall, in the past year, 85percent of the Websites selling such drugs do not require a prescription, according to ‘You’ve Got Drugs!’V Prescription Drug Pushers on the Internet,’ the fifth annual White Paper on this subject…”

The report goes on to state that 365 Web sites are advertising or selling controlled substances, with only two of them certified by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Many of these web sites state that no prescription is needed while others offer an online consultation.

There are no controls that keep kids and teens from accessing these sites and buying dangerous drugs. Unless this situation is put into check, it is likely that prescription drugs will move from number two to number one as the most abused drug. We have already seen that Xanax is becoming the most popular drug in some school yards. An easy search on the web can inform anyone how to buy xanax. It is not as easy to find an actual solution to the ensuing drug addiction.

This problem would not be hard to fix if there was enough concern from our citizens. The CASA report had a couple of good recommendations that would help alleviate the problem:

“Internet search engines block all advertisements for controlled prescription drugs that do not come from licensed and certified online pharmacies.

“The U.S. negotiate treaties with foreign governments to help shut down Internet trafficking of controlled prescription drugs.”

It is interesting that asking the pharmaceutical companies to have tighter controls on their products is not named as a recommendation.

With most state capitols and the US Capitol swarming with Big Pharma lobbyists, it would take an organized effort to make our voices heard.

The first step is educating enough people on the problem and encouraging parents to check their medicine cabinets and computers for evidence of prescription drug abuse in their kids. They can also go to our website to learn the signs of abuse.

If you know someone who is abusing prescription drugs, please call us at 877-413-3073.

We are the New Life Program.

Most people understand that there are times when the proper medication is life saving and necessary. Some ailments such as diabetes require long-term maintenance, but not everything can be treated with a pill.

Let’s get wise. There is no pill to bring the dead back to life or to cure young people who have become addicted.

Success Book 4

Posted on Jul 24, 2008

Since I have completed the Communications Book

I feel more at peace than I ever have. God has allowed me to get to this place for his purpose. I have always tried to ‘run the show' like a play or production, putting people and things in its place. How I want them. I feel I have opportunities that have and will come about just by waiting and letting things come to me. I am able to see some things that were always there but I could not see them because I was always too busy trying to ‘run my show'.

Loud Music in Bars Encourages Heavier, Faster Drinking

Shedding further light on the relationship between music and drinking behavior, a study from French researchers has found that loud music played in bars appears to encourage patrons to drink more and faster, HealthDay News reported July 18.

Previous investigations of music's effect on drinking had found that people spend more time in bars that play music than in establishments that don't, and that fast music appears to result in fast drinking. For this study, Nicolas Gueguen of the Université de Bretagne-Sud and colleagues looked at how male bar patrons' drinking behavior was affected by owners' random adjustments of music volume from normal to high and back.

In observing 40 male subjects between the ages of 18 and 25, the researchers found that music at higher volumes tended to encourage the men to drink more and faster. The researchers offered a couple of possible explanations: The louder sound might stimulate higher arousal levels, or the music simply might make verbal communication more difficult and thus encourage more time spent drinking.

"This is an informative and good study that I think a lot of people will identify with, because it makes a lot of sense," said Marc Galanter, M.D., director of the division of alcoholism and drug abuse at New York University's Langone Medical Center. "Because it seems that loud music throws people off their game and renders them less in control of their capacity to moderate their drinking."

The French research team suggested that consumers should be informed of the association between loud music and intensified drinking behavior, especially given that most of the automobile fatalities in France involve alcohol use.

The research will be published in the October issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. Taken from Blog Talk Radio and Join Together Call Narconon of Gerogia at 1-877-413-3073

Carolina Success

Posted on Jul 22, 2008
The Carolinas might be the first area in the country to become a drug free zone. John (as seen in the video) started the drug free trend two years ago. He became clean and happy through the Narconon program. His friends, seeing an astonishing difference in their former drug using buddy decided to see if they could do as well with Narconon.

Eventually five Narconon graduates returned to the Carolinas and as a result are making changes. A factory that was once drug infested in now drug free. Another Carolina Narconon graduate, Jason, was recently featured in the local newspaper and gives out Narconon brochures in his shop, encouraging drug users to get the effective help offered by Narconon.

It can be done – watch this video and start a drug free movement in your town.

Hous Banning Ads of New Drugs

Posted on Jul 21, 2008

A bill was just introduced in the House banning advertising of new drugs and devices for the first three years on the market. It also requires TV drug and device ads include a toll-free number, so we can easily report serious side effects to the FDA.

In September of 2007 we learned that “a substantially growing number of patients” were being injured or killed by drugs they were taking under doctor’s orders. This was according to a report from the Institute for the Safe Medication Practices. The report found that deaths and injuries resulting from prescribed medication use had doubled between 1998 and 2005, mostly from painkillers and immune system builders. The drugs related deaths went from 5,519 in 1998 to 15, 107 in 2005.

Some of us were paying attention.

Narconon of Georgiahas started a “What’s in Your Medicine Cabinet?” Through newsletters, the internet, radio and lectures, our intention is to educate as many people as we can on the dangers of prescription medication.

We feel very strongly that we will save lives to the degree we get the word out.

Our voice is not as loud as the TV commercials, but we make sense and we think most will want to listen.

There is an opportunity where you can also help us to get your law makers to listen.

A bill was just introduced in the House banning advertising of new drugs and devices for the first three years on the market. We are making a difference and will continue to do so as long we make our voices heard.

Join us in our campaign as we unite forces with other organizations.

Individuals have a right to their sanity and peace of mind. We must help protect that right.

Whats in your medicine cabinet? Oxycontin

Posted on Jul 18, 2008

What’s in your medicine cabinet?
OxyContin

The pharmaceutical company Purdue has now admitted to a fraudulent marketing campaign which downplayed OxyContin’s addictive character. However, the lives of those now addicted are still in the balance.

See full story here.

For 6 years the “hillbilly heroin” has lured new users with promises of euphoria and “low risk” hype. Thousands fell into the snare and are now entrapped in OxyContin addiction, replete with crime and death. What does the recent guilty plea to criminal charges by Perdue executives and high fines mean to these addicts?

Without hope of effective treatment, it means nothing, except for higher priced pills if the availability decreases.

According to addicts that we have surveyed, if drug dealers know that a person is dope sick for OxyContin they will charge more, realizing that the drug is so addictive that the addict will do anything to acquire it.

OxyContin, like all opiates, can become overwhelmingly addictive because the body quickly builds up a tolerance to it. Many who thought they were decreasing their chances of addiction with the time release OxyContin plan find themselves at the opposite end of their expectations and in the throes of addiction.

Persons get addicted to OxyContin in many ways.

In rural communities, where OxyContin is frequently prescribed to the elderly, sick and accident victims, it often winds up in the hands of family members. An experiment with one OxyContin pill, can lead to two a day and then suddenly escalate to 4 or 5 a day. The momentary "perfect high" leads to crime and destroyed lives.

Many individuals are prescribed OxyContin for sports injuries and some join the game of chasing the high, not the ball. There are cases where individuals with no previous drug or criminal history have lost their jobs, families and sometimes freedom, driven by the relentless cravings created by this synthetic morphine. They turn to “doctor shopping”, robbery, stealing prescriptions or the internet to keep their addiction going.

OxyContin is time release, providing 12 hours of synthetic morphine numbness. The time release aspect makes it dangerous for those who chew it to get the 12 hour dose at once. There have been reports of overdose and death from taking a life threatening dose through chewing or shooting a time release tablet

.
Weaning off or trying to stop OxyContin all together causes the bones to hurt, skin to crawl and other symptoms described as “sheer hell” by those who have tried it. “It was easier to keep taking the drug, even if it meant stealing or taking risks” states one drug addict.

It is any wonder that another street name for OxyContin is “Killer”?

Chances are you know someone who is taking OxyContin. With nearly six million prescriptions a year, (one billion in sales) OxyContin is the most popular narcotic painkiller in the country.

If someone you know has OxyContin in their medicine cabinet take the time to find out what the real situation is with their drug use. No matter their position in life, whether it is Girl Scout leader or Physician, no one can take with this drug for long and not have problems. Don’t be polite – get the truth. And if the truth is that they are taking a few extra pills here and there, get them some real help. The problem is not likely to get better without helpful intervention.

kids see more booze ads...

Posted on Jul 15, 2008
Kids See More Booze Ads Than 'Responsibility' Ads, CAMY July 2, 2007 News Summary Adolescents are 239 times more likely to see an ad touting alcohol than to view an industry-sponsored ad about "responsible" drinking, according to a new study from the Center on Alcohol Marketing & Youth (CAMY). Broadcasting & Cable reported June 29 that researchers who tracked more than a million alcohol ads broadcast between 2001 and 2005 said that the alcohol industry spent $4.9 billion on product ads during the five-year period, but just $104 million on "responsibility" ads. Just eight of 109 alcohol advertisers spent any money at all on responsibility ads, although a record amount ($24 million) was spent on such ads in 2005. Dan Jaffe, executive vice president of government relations for the American Association of Advertising Agencies, said the CAMY study "ignores the multi-millions of dollars being spent on these issues by The Ad Council and the Century Council, which are major public-service campaigns that impact these issues."

"CAMY acts as if advertising is the only or primary method of responding to these challenges," Jaffe said. "The alcohol-beverage community has numerous programs beyond advertising directed to these questions and that go far beyond advertising. They have dedicated substantial funding to these community based programs." For Drug Education and Rehabilitation Help Call Narconon of Gerogia at 877-413-3173.

NY Times - Maker of OxyContin pleaded guilty

Posted on Jul 15, 2008

ABINGDON, Va., May 10 — The company that makes the narcotic painkiller OxyContin and three current and former executives pleaded guilty today in federal court here to criminal charges that they misled regulators, doctors and patients about the drug’s risk of addiction and its potential to be abused.

To resolve criminal and civil charges related to the drug’s “misbranding,” the parent of Purdue Pharma, the company that markets OxyContin, agreed to pay some $600 million in fines and other payments, one of the largest amounts ever paid by a drug company in such a case.

Also, in a rare move, three executives of Purdue Pharma, including its president and its top lawyer, pleaded guilty today as individuals to misbranding, a criminal violation. They agreed to pay a total of $34.5 million in fines.

Efforts from the police and concerned citizens try to contain the devastation from drug abuse. Where Narconon is involved, there can be total success in cleaning up a community and in fact, it is happening.

Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia staff have seen first hand that once an addict is clean, has faced his situation, and taken responsibility for self, family, and surroundings, an area around them that was once drug-infested and crime ridden can be cleaned up and people can be happy and prosperous.

Take the case of a small town in North Carolina. Drug abuse was high with a great percentage of the workforce using drugs. Crime was up as the drug addicts did anything and everything to feed their addiction. Two years ago, one family sent their son to Narconon so that he could get clean.

When he returned, his uncle, JM, who had been trying to quit drugs for 18 years, saw him, and was convinced to come to Narconon of Georgia. He in turn told a friend, DJ, who in turn told another, BB. They all did the Narconon program, returned to their town, and realized that part of maintaining their sobriety was taking responsibility for their town. Returning with friends they had made in the program, DK and DL, they created a community where drug abuse is not promoted, tolerated, or condoned.

JM stated the factory he worked in before he entered rehab was a den of drug abuse. Working with his fellow employees, he has helped to establish a factory that is drug free, His experience in the "bad old days" alerts him to any sign of drug abuse and it is quick to be addressed. "I never thought life could be so good without drugs," he stated.

Another young graduate, DK, works at a BMW factory. "My life has turned into a fairy tale," he states. I was 19, young, and deep into doing drugs with my friends. Now I have responsibilities and a good future. This would not have been possible without Narconon. My parents sleep at night now knowing I am doing well."

These graduates have made a huge impact in their community. Once the target of police scrutiny and suspicion, (small towns know what everyone is doing), they now honorary members of the Drug Task Force and give lectures to local schools. "I don't condemn the kids, I just give them the facts," states DJ. "I tell them what my life was like and what it is now. They appreciate the honesty and see me as a good example, a role model they need to stay away from drugs."

Whole communities, once destined to becoming crime ridden drug dens, are now happy and thriving, thanks to the Narconon Drug Rehab graduates and the work they do.

What about your community? We can help you clean it up. It starts with you and your friends and a sea of calm and happiness can extend from there.
